Role Reasoning: Miyano is a very mild-mannered, introverted young man, whose main defining character trait (i.e., being obsessed with BL manga and storylines and tropes) is secret to most people. He prefers being on the sidelines, observing and inventing his own stories about people, and is generally happy to go with the flow and do what other people want him to do, seeing this as the best way to support his friends. His arc in the series is about realizing his own value to another person, and making more decisions based on what he wants, rather than what's convenient for other people. In Folkmore, being a Familiar would push Miyano to balance his desire to be a dependable, supportive person with honoring his own needs and desires, and figure out how to explore his own interests and identity, rather than always staying to one side and letting others have the spotlight.

What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why? One major relationship was with Makimura Nao, a girl in Miyano's junior high who he had a crush on. Being small and delicate-featured, he was extremely anxious and self-conscious about his "girly" looks, and when Makimura suggested that he'd look good cross-dressing, he grew even more embarrassed and shut down his feelings entirely. Even as a high schooler, Miyano gets more excited and enthusiastic about fictional scenarios than his own life, suggesting that accessing his own emotions is still difficult. Sasaki Shuumei is the other major relationship -- an older boy in his high school who is courageous and blunt, both things Miyano desperately wants to be. They bond over BL manga and slowly develop feelings for each other, which is terrifying for Miyano, who's always been so indecisive. He has to learn how to be honest and authentic with Sasaki, and accept that his feelings are genuine and important, and much messier than a manga storyline. He also experiences the urge to care for someone, to take care of and protect them, in a much more intimate way than he ever has before, which challenges a lot of his preconceived notions about who he is.

What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not? Miyano is part of the disciplinary committee, which oversees rules and regulations around his high school -- sort of an odd choice for a teenage boy. While the committee is responsible for writing demerits and enacting discipline, Miya isn't really a stickler for this all the time. He makes notable exceptions (mostly selfishly; like not reporting Sasaki for having piercings, because piercings are cool), suggesting that he's willing to compromise said rules if need be. His moral code is less about strictly adhering to the regulations, and more about how he's seen by others -- he admires Hirano, the president of the committee, and sees him as someone cool and in control. His moral code seems to be "follow the rules if you can, but if you can't, it's not the end of the world", which is very indicative of a teenager still figuring out who they are and how they fit in.

What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise. Like most teenagers, Miyano has significant self-esteem issues, mostly regarding his appearance. He's short -- 162 cm -- and has very "pretty" features, which causes a lot of people to tease him mercilessly. It's never meant maliciously, but the combination of being small and delicate-looking clearly frustrates Miyano, and pushes him to try and seem more in control and decisive than he actually is. Truthfully, he's much more willing to go along with what other people want than try to advocate for himself, both at school and in his day-to-day life. His main hobby is a very solitary one, and while his friends are aware (and tease him about being an otaku), they don't participate or share his love of manga. Miyano gets extremely anxious when Sasaki first starts asking him for BL recommendations, clearly caught between embarrassment about this cool older guy teasing him and eagerness to finally share his interests. Overall Miyano most struggles with confidence and being genuine in what he thinks and feels, especially to people he cares about.

What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed? Adorably, Miyano's safespace -- where he's happiest and most honestly himself -- is when he's reading or talking about gay romance manga. He picked up the habit entirely by accident (he bought a BL manga by mistake, thinking it was about sports), but the story and the art completely compelled him, and now he's absolutely obsessed. He visibly lights up and gets excited when he's able to talk about specific series or authors, and can ramble for hours about different tropes and premises and storylines. It's to the point where he listens to audio dramas and goes to see movie adaptations and takes it all very seriously. When Sasaki starts exploring the different manga and stories, Miyano is completely overwhelmed by how happy it makes him to be able to talk about something he loves so much. The safespace expands to include a person, not just a hobby, someone who respects his interests (as embarrassing as they are) and encourages him to talk about what makes him excited and happy. It's the first time his special interest is treated legitimately, and not like a joke, and it's part of what allows Miya to accept that he's fallen in love.
